Matmen Meet First of a series of professional bouts staged by the new national body...the New Zealand Wrestling Union.....two bulky men of the grunt and groan trade, Mr Lou "Shoulders" Newman and Mr Herb Freeman, met in Wanganui. The Wanganui Wrestling Association had nothing to do with the bout other than to supply some amateurs for preliminary bouts. The £700 portable ring found the going a bit tough in the second round when both wrestlers flung themselves into the ropes. It took half a dozen officials plus "Shoulders" ten minutes to take a kink out of one of the heavy steel corner posts which collapsed. If anyone is interested, Lou Shoulders was disqualified after throwing the Wellington ref, Terry Williams, out of the ring......tough. Nobody makes a monkey outa me snorts one maddened grappler as he tears his fur..oops..hair in rage Officials straighten the bent corner post Ref Terry Williams endeavours to break up Newman and Freeman as Newman tries to lynch the latter Freeman connects with a drop kick "What lovely eyes you have" says Newman as he happily gouges one out of Freeman's skull. Stop....you're killing me! Newman does his level best to make Freeman's head and body two separate articles. However they were best of buddies again after the match. 21
